The text at <http://www.w3.org/TR/1999/REC-html401-19991224/intro/sgmltut.html#h-3.2.4> indicates that an html comment may not begin with "<! --", as white space is not allowed after the "!". Your impressive validator at <http://validator.w3.org/> accepts it however in case of my page at <http://cap-lore.com/test.html>.
