Solidus not allowed

When validating for html 4.01 transitional, why do I get:

... uarter</TH> <TH>Type</TH> <TH>Range</TH> <TH>Typed/HWritten</TH> <TH>S
...
                                                       ^
Error: end tag for "TABLE" omitted; possible causes include a missing end
tag, improper nesting of elements, or use of an element where it is not
allowed 
Replacing the solidus with &#47; works fine but there does not appear to be
a &solidus;
