Not detecting XHTML1.1 DTD

Hello,

The HTML validator seemed not to pick up the following document type, 
although it went on validate without difficulty.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1 Strict//EN" 
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">

Seems a bit odd, or perhaps I have made an error?
