validator complaining about &

I'm getting this error on a page uploaded to validator.w3.org.  I don't
quote understand why as this is exactly what it suggested I put there.

...?referrer=yahoo&amp;category=Education
                   ^
Error: unknown entity "amp" (explanation...)

I have recently also gotten the error with &nbsp;.  Is entity checking
working?
