Actually, they're not:-

Attributes: Common, alt* (Text), height (Length), longdesc (URI), src*
(URI), width (Length)
]]] -

They're not *required*, but they're not *deprecated* either. It most
certainly does not invalidate your XHTML 1.1 if you include them.
