I've pinged Henri about it, so let's at least wait until we hear back from him.

In the mean time, I have looked at it myself, but so far what I've found is
what I noted in comment #7 -- that the problem does not occur for the
non-gzipped case if I use the --data switch with curl instead of the
--data-binary switch.
