Actually,

In English today, it is quite normal to refer to the language as Farsi, 
rather than Persian.  I suppose because Persia doesn't exist anymore, 
Darius is millenia dead and Riza Pahlavi was deposed decades ago now.  
Language: Farsi; modern state: Iran; former state and historical empire: 
Persia, Persian.
