we're going to try your patches in the next few days. it looks indeed  
that our switching to the velocity engine for output causes quite a  
few issues with paths.

Just wanted to make sure: did you try using the jar linked from: http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/DOWNLOAD.html 
  or are you working from the CVS HEAD?
