http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ correctly treats <style type="text/css"> <!-- as a comment in XHTML with "application/xhtml+xml". It also issues a warning | Do not put style rules inside HTML comments Test case: http://www.unics.uni-hannover.de/nhtcapri/temp/no-comment.x.html However, with "content-type: text/html" there is no such warning and the <style> is recognized.
