The specification is authoritative, a third party book isn't.

No sign of inline-block there.

That said ... http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/visuren.html#display-prop
does have it, but CSS 2.1 is a Working Draft at present so it isn't
the default profile for the CSS validator (you can select a profile in
the advanced interface).
