Is it that you didn't see the pargraph following the code that points
out that it was HTML and that if you were using XHTML you should
modify it?

The CSS validator will give you XHTML code automatically if you
provide it with the URL to an XHTML document and ask it to validate
the stylesheets referenced by it.
