The generated markup is valid HTML if you point the validator at an
HTML or CSS document. It is valid XHTML if you point the validator at
an XHTML document. This may change in future, but has been discussed
more then a few times in the recent past, so I suggest you check the
mailing list archives (http://lists.w3.org/) if you want more details.
