Error with CSS Validator yesterday

On the afternoon of July 27, the CSS Validation page went down for
several hours.  Relatively, the css-validation icons located on the w3c
servers came up broken on every website that refered to it.  

Was this down-time a result of some update?  Should we expect it again
anytime soon?  Has anyone addressed this, and will there be future
warnings of downtime?
