CSS validator

Dear W3C,
	I don't understand why I can validate my xhtml documents with the 
HTML validator, and the included CSS documents with the CSS validator, 
but when I try to run the whole thing through the CSS validator, it says 
that it needs a correct document parse tree.  Any advice?
