RE: HTML+SMIL handles text well

Hi,

XHTML+SMIL is one of the profiles supported by SMIL 2. If Timed Text is
designed to work in a modular way with SMIL 2 then it could easily be
added to XHTML+SMIL in the same way.

Probably you don't want to have to define a new text definition markup
language, but rather leverage HTML/XHTML.

By the way, the W3C HTML working group just picked up the charter to
come out with an official XHTML+SMIL profile.

Hi Michael,

I didn't mean to imply that Timed-text should be inlined like the
HTML+SMIL example, just that this was the best way to show how
fade transitions and transparent backgrounds look. HTML+SMIL is great
technology but how likely is it that Microsoft is going to support IE on

other platforms (Linux) and support open media formats (Ogg Audio,
Vorbis.com) and no one else is stepping up to plate with a HTML+SMIL
browser.

Maybe Timed-text can be designed like SMIL 2.0. Where there is a
specification for a full set of features and subset (profiles) create
from that. That's what SMIL 2.0 profile is, it supports most of SMIL 2.0

language, here's an overview:

m

This way a basic Timed-text profile can be created that can be implement
soon. Right now RealOne is like a car with 3 wheels it's almost ready
go, the last wheel being Timed-text.

A basic Timed-text profile wouldn't have to have roll or crawl features
because SMIL 2.0 profile could move the text by animating one of the
region attributes.

Move horizontally (about 10KB):

l

Move vertically (about 20KB):

Simple is better, especially when this technology could and should be
used by everyone in the world.
