Session tracking

Is anyone doing any kind of session tracking (e.g. through CGI)?
We are looking for more detailed usage information than log
file analysis. What kind of software are sites like www.pathfinder.com,
www.hotwired.com, and www.amazon.com using that includes a
session ID in the URLs? I am interested in both commercial
and non-commercial packages.
