Path BNF errata?

Hi all,

in http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/paths.html#PathDataBNF almost all 
whitespace is declared optional, eg.

coordinate-pair:
     coordinate comma-wsp? coordinate

Is this really true? That doesn't look sensible to me. Can somebody 
exmplain that?
