Howto compress svg?

I am having the devil's own job getting any svgz file to validate.

current method: paste code into file, save as svg, gzip, rename
from .svg.gz to svgz

works for Opera, Batik and Amaya but not the W3C validator, Mozilla or
Safari

cheers

saved as
http://www.peepo.org.uk/temp/vxhtml11.svgz
to test server

then copy and paste code into file, save as svg, gzip, rename
from .svg.gz to svgz

wont validate
