I cannot see, how this is related to zooming or 
device/screen pixels.

If you need it, almost everything can be 
adjusted/animated somehow to change 
dimension, shape or position of an object
with a hole. Even the viewBox can be
animated to change the relation between
the local/user coordinate system and the
viewport/screen coordinate system, 
sometimes very useful.
