auto scale

I'm trying to define a SVG graphic and then add some elements to it. This
was fairly easy. Now I would like to programatically auto-scale the graphic
so that the largest element fits on the screen.  I saw a bit about a
transform called 'fit' but I can't find anything else out on it...  Does
anyone have some good documentation on this?
