It seems like the best option might be to truly do some form of embedded
objects/linked objects.  Essentially the description of the shape would be
located somewhere else and could be embedded as a linked object from any
page....so you'd only have to change the decription once for it to take
effect in all the pages that use it.  This would be especially useful for
things like buttons, etc.
