I can't stand this professionals/amateurs discussion. Professional what ?
Markup Language Experts ? I spent whole 1996 with one of Germany's largest
companies, also a global player in electronics. I think no one would say
the employees are amateurs.
It's simply a question of money. If an engineer (or other academic) is
required to build web pages it will cost twice the money compared to a
simple secretary sitting in front of FrontPage (or whatever). I agree
DSSSL and even CSS1 will be very useable for certain kinds of applications,
but most pages simply do not change often enough to justify an "expert" to
build them. And they are needed *now* and at lowest possible cost.
I spent the whole year preaching clean HTML and CSS1. The killer arguments
simply are "it's too expensive" and "we'll do it when Micro$cape authoring
tools do it" and "we are a profit center, not a webweenie's testbed".
It's frustrating seeing many work hours spent building "trash", but if a
customer pays it, it is done. And if it's cheaper doing it with ugly HTML,
it will get the department in the contract.
This all is frustrating and sad, but true. Someone capable of following the
discussion in www-style probably is too expensive to write xxML.
