Style Sheets, Image SRC,x,y

The problem I have with style sheets is when using many background 
graphics.  The browser has to go download each one individually.  I 
wish there was some way to specify an image src origin.  That is, I 
have an image and I would like to use a certain region of this image 
for the display image.
