FYI, there's also an open issue about how calc()-expressions involving percentages should be resolved for grid-gap/padding/ margins when the percentage basis is indefinite: https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/2297 It's probably a good idea to investigate that too in this context, and discuss/resolve both issues at the same time.
