That's not "auto-multicol", it's just "multicol".  It's a standard
usage of the feature; just set 'height' and 'column-width' and you'll
get the desired behavior.  What's under discussion here is the
automatic activation of multicol in certain (rare) circumstances to
combat unintentional bad layout.
