Let me view this from the translators point of view.
"Expanding" is a pretty straight forward word to translate, there are no
difficulties. Most times I run into a "word of art" like "embiggening" I
loose at least half an hour searching the net for any "special meaning"
in that word to not miss any important thing that might be connected to it.

"Expanding" is plain and simple, and the meaning of "expanding" should
come from the text around itself, so that there is no room for
speculation around the meaning. That would also work for embiggening, if
it is explained right, but again, plain simple language, best with words
that have only one major meaning and using these words with the commonly
known meaning is wanted to make it accessible to non native english
speakers or lets say not well trained "W3C english" (en-W3) speakers.
