The short answer:

* No, there is no fundamental issue. Shorthands with variables are 
well-behaved, and consistent with shorthands with variables.

* Yes, there is some implementation cost, but itís worth it.

* There is a limitation in that the ususal fallback mechanism doesnít 
work. I started a new thread about this:
