Percentage not valid for column-gap?

Back in 2001 percentage was avalid unit for this attrbute

Today it isn't? http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-multicol/#column-gap

Anyone know why? Seems to make sense from an author perspective, so
why did it vanish?
