I prefer @region to @region-style also.

It's definitely more intuitive to just style the elements rather than lines inside the elements, but the set of issues this creates are just so vast.  My lines suggestion is largely a hack in order to make an implementation possible.

Maybe it would be worth talking about the issues with trying to style the elements themselves in more detail though to see if any simplifying assumptions could be made.
