I was curious about it too. I was preferring $foo, and was wondering if it was because of programming languages. So I asked around on twitter. This is not a serious poll, just a way to test the mood.

9 $foo
6 var(foo)
1 whatever

one difficult-to-classify comment:
I favor @var foo value; to set, var(foo) to access. Could live with $foo to access. –http://twitter.com/fvsch/status/35024381151281152
