Okay, so let's take a step back.

First, you appear to not have an opinion on the subject of the thread, correct?

So, let's talk about just replaced elements then.

Are you saying that you'd like to be able to do ::before on replaced elements?

If so, how are you reconciling your mental model of how that would
work with the way that replaced elements don't have children?
