Re: layout idea

Here's a suggestion to help come up with the best CSS layout system:

The CSS WG could ask web designers to submit some HTML markup,
together with one or more images that would illustrate the desired
layout effect that they feel should be made possible with CSS.

These designs could range from simple concepts to complex ones, but
most importantly should focus on designs they wish they could use
today (without extra markup/CSS hacks). We could then see how well (if
at all) they could be achieved using the various proposed layout
systems, thus revealing which system would likely work best in most
situations.

While not every submission may address each situation that
implementers/spec writers need to consider, just having a large amount
of concepts to experiment with should be helpful in finding the system
best suited for the task.

To some degree, Fantasai already asked this of designers when
requesting general CSS3 feedback [1]. However, considering the
importance and complexity of a full-fledged layout system, I believe
it's important that the CSS WG request layout samples specifically,
including a guideline on how to submit them.

As the web desigining community appears largely in favor of having a
proper layout system, there should be significant willingness to help
the process of deciding on one. Submitting samples would seem to be
the best way for them to accomplish this.
