In the given attachment, the change-handling code is custom-written for 
the particular selector involved.  It wouldn't work for a different 
selector.

As I said before, if you do that, then reasonable performance is 
possible without too much trouble.  The hard part is creating something 
that behaves correctly no matter what selectors the page uses.
