Brainstorming is fine, but "we should throw out the current layout system 
and replace it with something else!" is not brainstorming -- and it is 
likely to do little more than antagonise the people who have invested 
significant manyears into the existing layout algorithm.

Sure, a new layout mechanism might well be better than the existing one, 
and sure, the existing one has its flaws (as all systems do).

What did you have in mind?
