[css3-selectors] 6.2 Universal Selector

In section 6.2 [1], there is a note that states:

| Note: it is recommended that the *, representing the universal
| selector, not be omitted.

I'm just wondering what the reasoning behind this recommendation is, 
since most authors actually do omit it whenever it's not necessary.
