As Lachlan Hunt said, Media Queries will do what you want.  They are  
implemented by at least Opera 7, so you can even test it out if you like.

Keep in mind, too, that screen resolution isn't important.  It's viewport  
dimensions that's important.  A lot of people have sidebars in their  
user-agents, or don't maximise their windows.
