UK convention is to put unfavorable amounts in technical financial
documents (balance sheets, etc.) in parentheses, without any sign
character.

The historic convention for bank statements was to suffix with CR or DR.

(COBOL can cope with the latter, but you need the IBM 360 machine code
number editing instruction to do the former!)
