do you have a more complex (mondrian?) image to demonstrate your method?
the 'test' you use works, but may have very limited application.

I  have attached the simplest non-working example that I could come up with:
ie two patches of color, neither are displayed in ie5.2 on a mac, though 
mozilla is happy enough....
