I expect there to always be non-compliant browsers, but I'm hoping that some 
day I'll be satisfied with the markup that they're all compliant with so I 
won't need a browser sniffer so badly.

That depends on how you want your web page to look. The very presence of a 
<span class> in my HTML messes things up with Navigator 4.08. I'm still not 
sure where my dozens of validation errors are coming from, but some are 
probably coming from the presentation control tags that I use--or else they 
will be eventually.
