multi-column layout

i noticed that both the 18 January 2001 and 22 June 1999 Multi-column layout 
WDs are linked from the CSS3 Intro.  does the 18 January 2001 WD represent 
the prefered model?  i was looking it over and i think that the variation #2 
in the 22 June 1999 WD provided a much more flexible model without the 
clutter of all the new properties.  this variation hasn't been scrapped, i 
hope; it has great potential.
