help: styling a column with :first-child?

Hallo,
I'm trying to style every first TD in a table so I give:

table tr:first-child{text-align:left;}

but I don't seem to make it. Can someone tell me what I'm missing here please?
I'd be happy to see some action in this list again. I guess everyone is too busy...
