Slow styles?

Hi,

I am developing a portal Web site at the moment with nested tables and a <span> with a class associated with it around the font within each of the cells. The browser (Internet Explorer) will load the top table (where the main interface is), but once it gets to the second table, the one with the styles applied to it, it has to think for around 4-5 seconds.

Has anyone else come across this problem with nested tables and style sheets? Maybe it's a "class" thing?
