  To offer more flexibilty SMIL should incorperate 'begin' and 'end' region commands. It would also be an immense advantage to be able to 'move' regions using screen xyand z vectors. Perhaps, given it's temporal and dynamic structure, this is not such a far fetched suggestion.
  Another absolute necessity to SMIL's viabilty is the possibilty to change specified region content on demand without having to reload the whole screen.
  True interactivity dictates that the user should have input, not just be led by the nose through a pre-defined presentation.
  Whilst SMIL is my personal favorite, there are still many unattended issues that need to be addressed in order to justify claims of greater flexibility.
