This is not yet in the SMIL specifications (perhaps in SMIL 2.0?).

You can use kinds of "buttons" by creating a link over an image (or
anything else):

<a href="otherSMIL.smil">
 <img src="foo.gif" region="region_id" />
</a>

I'll add something about links in the next Tutorial edition.
