Welcome to the new edition of Just SMIL. The site has been on hiatus
the last few weeks for a redesign. The site is ready to explore
though
I will still be tweaking things into place over the next week.
Java-Based Player to Beta on Sept 7th
According to Herve Foucher of [24]Helio, a Java-based SMIL Player is
expected to enter beta on September 7th. Helio will charge a fee for
intranet use but general Internet use is expected to be free.
T.A.G. Editor 2.0 in Beta
[25]Digital Renaissance has made a beta of their T.A.G. Editor 2.0
available. On top of generating SMIL, T.A.G. will now generate the
RealPlayer RealPix and RealText formats. For information on their
beta
program, [26]visit their Web site.
RealPlayer on the Horizon?
While Just SMIL has no official confirmation, word on the street has
it that [27]RealNetworks is going to ship RealPlayer in the next
couple of weeks. They have revamped their site and there has been a
host of production tools rolling out over the last month. Considering
the relative silence of SMIL in the trade press lately, I am hoping
that it is simply the calm before the storm.
