Workshop on the Model-Driven Semantic Web: Enabling Knowledge
Representation and MDA Technologies to Work Together
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
MDSW 2004 is the first of what we hope will be many workshops that bring
researchers and practitioners in knowledge representation and reasoning
together with Model Driven Architecture® (MDA) practitioners. The focus
of the workshop will be on how the marriage of Model Driven Architecture
with knowledge representation and reasoning technology can dramatically
improve current approaches to ontology and knowledge base development
and, at the same time, enable next generation enterprise computing by
automating business semantics interchange and execution. Researchers in
knowledge representation and the Semantic Web have been defining tools
and methodologies that make it possible to formally capture semantic
knowledge. Once captured, additional automation can leverage this
knowledge to streamline the alignment of information models that is a
prerequisite to information exchange among multiple parties.
Independently, there has been quite a bit of work on model-driven schema
and data translation that obviates the need for detailed hand coding of
syntactic transformations, and this work is now beginning to be combined
synergistically with semantic alignment techniques. Furthermore, MDA
has been promoting the concept of using invariant rules, preconditions,
and postconditions when describing service interfaces, as a means of
formalizing the semantics of a service's behavior rather than
formalizing merely an operation signature.
Participants in the MDSW workshop will discuss ways of bringing the MDA
and Semantic Web worlds together in ways that can advance the
state-of-the-art for each community while enabling new capabilities in
business interoperability through cross-disciplinary interaction.
