In the section 3.1 of OWL Overview, it is stated that:
"Individuals are instances of classes".

As OWL contains a term <owl:Individual> to refer to instances
of classes, it would be preferable to use the term 'Individual'.
But I believe that 'Instance' and 'Individual' can be used interchangeably.
