Despite predictions that doing business via the Internet and the World Wide Web would be a de-humanising process with less and less face-to-face contact, or should I say human inter-facing, the individuals who make up the music industry still appear to have an appetite for person-to-person contact, and socialising – or again, should I say – networking. The number of trade shows and showcase events is on the increase and attendance at selected, and in some cases nearly all, of these appears to be considered essential and worth paying out for by a high proportion of the business.

So – with the echoes of Holland’s Noorderslag/Eurosonic event still ringing in our ears, the Vip team flew to the South of France to mingle with a few thousand music business professionals at MIDEM to find out what is going on, and of course, as this is a trade market, to promote our web based products, and the Vip Book of course. MIDEM is the biggest, and longest established of the music trade markets, and this was the 39th edition. For the first time this International Market for Records and Music Publishing, a true interpretation and translation of the acronym (as opposed to the Must I Drink Every Moment applied by some of the stalwarts of the Cannes Hotels and Bars!) devoted a large part of one of the days to the Live Industry, and we bring you a report in this issue of the News.

Next month the focus will shift to Norway for by: Larm in Stavanger from 10-12 February, then in March we have Canadian Music Week, ILMC 17 in London, and then SXSW in Austin Texas: - it’s a never ending world tour for the many people who attend the majority of these events – human interaction still rules. A very good thing for a ‘Live’ industry!

Midem or “the Majors are dead, long live the majors”

The 39th edition of Midem became a vital sign for the process of the conversion of the music business.

While business and exhibitor figures already indicated slightly better figures than last year it was the visibility of new players that shows where the music business is heading.

Midem’s first foray into the Live Industry began with a welcome from Creative Director Dominique Leguern who stated that the Organisation were very aware of the successes of the live music market, and that as an increasingly essential sector of the industry they were keen to form new relationships and to build up the attendance and involvement of the live industry at future editions of the Market.

Midem she said were keen to receive suggestions and to enter into dialogue about new features that the Market could introduce to international delegates, so that their traditional clientele could learn more about working with this sector of the industry and vice versa..

At Midem 2005 VIP-News talked to the new EU Commissioner of Education, Training, Culture and Multilingualism Ján Figel.

Although he has only held this position since November 2004 it looks like a few new things might soon be on the agenda of politicians and lobbyists on a European level that could have an impact for pop music business representatives 

 
New Major UK Agency Formed

Three heavyweights from the UK Agency community have joined forces to form a new company X-Ray Touring Ltd.

Scott Thomas & Martin Horne previously with ITB and Ian Huffam previously with Helter Skelter form the core of the new company together with 4 other staff members.  

 
Public Nominate Top Scottish Bands

We’ve been hearing a lot from Scottish bands lately, with the success of the likes of Franz Ferdinand and Snow Patrol- both of these acts having picked up multiple Brit Award nominations.

The success of these acts at home and abroad are a matter of some pride in the country – (making up somewhat for a somewhat downbeat record on the football field of late!). This interest prompted The List magazine to conduct the three month long poll amongst Scottish music fans. 

 
Eastern Europe Music Convention

St. Petersburg will open its gates to the Entertainment Industry on 16-17 June 2005 for the Eastern Europe Music Convention (EEMC).

The first edition of this event will present a two-day business program with meeting areas providing a unique opportunity to fasten business relationships in this part of the world. 

 
Hangarfestival 2005 - Denmark’s new festival

Hangarfestival – Denmark’s new festival in Vandel, Jutland, lifted off in the airspace over Vandel on Monday 10 January 2005.

And to mark the launch, organisers formed an alliance with Sterling, who provided a ”Red” Boeing 737 – 800 specially for the occasion.  

 
Joe Rambock opens office for Marek Lieberberg in Berlin

Joe Rambock, who formerly worked for FKP Scorpio has left the company to join Marek Lieberberg Konzertagentur (MLK.com).  

 
WDR Rockpalast and Intro team up for cooperation

The TV station WDR will collaborate with the publishing company of the music magazine Intro. Part of the deal is the media coverage of the events organized by Intro; Intro Intim and the Melt-Festival.

The kick off event for the cooperation is scheduled for an edition of Intro Intim on February 10 at the Gebäude venue in Cologne. 

 
Sanctuary release preliminary results for the business year 2004

With a turnover increase of about 45,7 % from 151,7 million GPS in 2003 up to 220,9 million GPS in 2004 proved growth.

However the EBITDA (Earnings before interests, taxes, depreciation and amortization) profitability was not so impressive with a somewhat lower increase of only 9 % from 22,8 million (2003) to 24,8 million GPS.

Clear Channel (CCU.NSE.): On January 18 VIP-News reported 32,00 USD, slightly up this time to 32,09 USD.

CTS Eventim (EVD.FSE): Unbelievable 19.00 Euro last time and this time 21,45 Euro.

DEAG (ERM.FSE): A little downer: from 2,02 to 1.93 Euro.

Mean Fiddler (MEF.ISE): Mean Fiddler goes from 45 up to 50 Pence.

Sanctuary (SGP.ISE): It is probably the profitability ratio that causes concerns even if the turnover raises. From 45,50 down to 44,50 Pence.
