You asked "how can it [an ontology] be related to knowledge sharing?"

There's an example you can run at an English level, rather than in the more technical XML/RDF notation.

It concerns a retailer talking about a "PC for Gamers" and a manufacturer talking about a "Professional Workstation" , and it is based on  [1].

The ontology is used to help them figure out that the two are almost the same, so that they can share their knowledge.

To run the example, please point Netscape 7 or Mozilla to www.reengineeringllc.com .

Click on Internet Business Logic   , then on GO .  Select SemanticResolution1, then please use the Help button to see how to view and run the example.
