This discussion seems to be related to the concept of a resource view that Stefano Mazocchi described in a paper [1] at ApacheCon2000. He indicated that Cocoon2 (which I haven't kept up with) was going to support Resource Views using a special query param on the URL. The discussion of views is in section 14 of the paper.
